GC Media Football Poll is scheduled for a weekly release during 2018 season on Tuesdays
PRESCOTT VALLEY — After starting last season 0-5 under a new coach, the Bradshaw Mountain football team finished strong, going 4-1 in the last five weeks of the season, including four straight wins.
The club’s playoff hopes were shattered in the season finale, suffering a devastating 44-27 loss at the hands of rival Prescott.
But on Tuesday, those “hopes” for a stellar 2018 season were renewed as the inaugural 2018 Grand Canyon Media Football Poll was released, projecting the Bears to finish No. 1 in the region this fall.
“Until you play a game, like anything else, you never know,” second-year Bears head coach Chuck Moller said in a phone interview Tuesday night about the poll. “It’s always nice to be thought of, but at the end of the year, where we finish, that means more.”
He continued, “I think we have talent, I don’t think we have much depth. In a lot of positions, we have a good first team, but we don’t have much of a second team,” Moller said. “If we stay healthy, I think we can do good things.”
Bradshaw Mountain (4-6, 4-2 Grand Canyon in 2017) also received five first-place votes and garnered 67 total points, just four ahead of Cottonwood-based Mingus, which was the lone Grand Canyon recipient in the 4A state playoffs a season ago and the defending region champion.
Mingus scored 63 total points in the inaugural poll, putting them second with four total first-place votes. Prescott came in third with 60 points and received two first-place votes, while Flagstaff came in fourth with 47 points.
Lee Williams (27 points), Mohave (23 points) and Coconino (21 points) came in fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
