PRESCOTT — Kody Jones followed up his one-hit shutout victory from a week ago with another gem, pitching a complete game and allowing only one run in a tough 1-0 loss to first-place Mingus on Monday afternoon.
“He threw the ball well again today,” Prescott skipper Kent Winslow said.
The senior right-handed hurler allowed seven hits and struck out five in the 1-0 loss to the No. 9-ranked Marauders (15-4, 8-1 Grand Canyon), which have won six of their last seven games and earned their second shutout this spring.
Mingus, which leads Lee Williams by 1.5 games for first place in the Grand Canyon region, shut out Wickenburg 11-0 back on March 5, and are now 2-1 in one-run games this season.
In the top of the fourth inning, Angel Betancourt led off with a single, was bunted over by Jordan Huey and then scored on a Justin Link hit that was later ruled an error, putting the Marauders up 1-0.
Winslow said the ball took a difficult hop and spun into left field after Badgers third baseman Ray Chairez tried to field the ball.
At the plate, Prescott (10-15, 3-6 Grand Canyon) managed only six hits against Justin Tanner, who went the distance and earned four strikeouts.
Jones, Chairez and Brance Christopherson were each 1 for 3 at the plate. Ryan Greene hit a deep fly ball to right field that on most days would clear the fence, but Monday’s windy weather whipped around the outfield resulting in long outs.
“We hit well, we pitched well, but we just came up a run short,” Winslow said.
The Badgers have three games remaining on the regular season schedule beginning with a road trip to Bullhead City to face last-place Mohave (11-14, 1-7 Grand Canyon) today. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
Prescott turns around and hosts Mohave on Thursday, April 19, before wrapping up the regular season in Cottonwood against Mingus on Monday, April 23.
