Letter: Granite Dells
The Granite Dells have been enthusiastically described as one of Prescott’s premier destinations for hiking, biking, bird-watching, and numerous other activities. In order to cast additional light on the special nature of this special place, I would call your attention to the fall 2017 issue of Rails to Trails magazine, which is published by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (a national organization). [Online address: http://magazine.railstotrails.org/resources/magflipbooks/2017_fall/#]. In it, our own Peavine Trail – including the connected Iron King Trail and the surrounding area – is described in glowing terms as part of an article featuring “10 Top-Notch Western Rail-Trails.” As is now known, a private development company, Arizona Eco Development (“AED”), has acquired large tracts of land within (and to the north of) the Granite Dells and is quietly planning to build an extensive development along the Peavine and Iron King trails, including an exclusive resort near the Point of Rocks. While certain rights generally attach with regard to the ownership of private property, such rights are not unlimited and are legitimately subject to reasonable restrictions. The City of Prescott must therefore utilize its review process to carefully inspect AED’s plans, considering the obvious impact on the area in question and ensuring that valid public interests are protected.
