Volunteers prepare the community garden during National Service Recognition Day as Prescott Council Member Alexa Scholl, Prescott Valley Mayor Harvey Skoog and Chino Valley Mayor Darryl Croft were on hand to support Arizona Serve on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at the Prescott YMCA Community Garden.
The event recognizes the work of national service members in Yavapai County, highlighting AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA and other national service projects, and thanking national service members for their commitment and service to Yavapai County. Last year, 4,520 mayors representing more than 194 million citizens participated in the fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service. The initiative is being led by National League of Cities, National Association of Counties, Cities of Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
For the fourth year in a row, national service members (AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA) from Arizona Serve will enhance the community garden at the Prescott YMCA. The garden was created eight years ago with the goal of providing fresh produce for those in need in the community. Local residents who manage the plots, commit to donating over 1,000 pounds of vegetables a year to organizations such as the Coalition for Compassion and Justice, Meals on Wheels, Prescott Community Cupboard and various church organizations, which distribute food for those in need.
