Fundraiser to support reproductive freedom Sunday at Raven
The Raven Cafe has volunteered its space and staff for a fundraiser to support reproductive freedom and access to health care Sunday, Sept. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. The “Singing for our Lives” event includes an all-women’s concert performance and raffles.
Gerry Garvey, the Ryan White medical case manager with Northland Cares, said Arizona legislators decided this past year to control where the state’s $4.5 million share of the federal Title X funds will be spent.
For more than 30 years the nonprofit Arizona Family Health Partnership oversaw the Title X program, working with Planned Parenthood and other community clinics. Title X funds helps low-income patients with birth control, pregnancy counseling and treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases. The money cannot be used for abortions.
“None of the Title X money can be used for education, lobbying or consulting for attorneys, so this is why there is a need to raise outside funds,” Garvey said.
The Singing for Our Lives performers are donating their time, the Raven is providing refreshments, and many people have donated nice pieces of art to raffle off, she added.
“We hope to make it a good night, an educational night, so people won’t wake up one day and realize it’s gone.”
