Local Sports in Brief: USATF Arizona cross-country meet Sept. 16

USA Track & Field Arizona will play host to the inaugural USATF Arizona Regulation Cross-Country Meet on Saturday, Sept. 16, at Bradshaw Mountain High School, 6000 E. Long Look Drive, in Prescott Valley. Walkthrough begins at 9 a.m., followed by five different divisions racing separately, starting at 10 a.m. Youth and open/masters age divisions are eligible. All races are open to Arizona Association athletes. Clubs and organizations bringing teams must be current members in good standing with USATF. Find the course map at usatf.org. Pick Your Favorite Charity Golf Tournament underway Sept. 16

The sixth annual Pick Your Favorite Charity Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Prescott Evening Lions Club and Foundation, is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Antelope Hills South Golf Course in Prescott. Winners will receive a contribution in their name to the qualifying charity of their choice. The tournament is a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $65 per golfer and a minimum of $50 is a designated contribution to a local charity of the golfer’s choice. The contribution will qualify for the state of Arizona’s Working Poor Tax Credit. Local businesses will sponsor tee boxes and greens. Skull Valley Loop bicycling challenge Sept. 17 in Prescott

The annual Skull Valley Loop Challenge road cycling challenge is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Goodwin and Montezuma streets near the Prescott Chamber of Commerce building. Registration fee is $64 through the early morning hours of Sept. 17. Established in 2007, the challenge consists of a nearly 54-mile loop that begins in downtown Prescott, winds through the Prescott National Forest and into the surrounding valleys (including Skull Valley and Wilhoit), and concludes at the courthouse plaza downtown. Last-minute registration and check-in runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Chamber. Organizers will also process registrations and check-ins from 6 to 6:45 a.m. on Sept. 17. Parking is available at the Yavapai County Courthouse or in the city’s parking garage on Granite Street. Bring water and wear cycling clothes.

Phoenix Suns to open training camp Sept. 26 in Flagstaff

The Phoenix Suns are set to return to Flagstaff this month when they report for training camp on the campus of Northern Arizona University beginning Tuesday, Sept. 26, and capped with an intra-squad scrimmage Friday, Sept. 29, at the Prescott Valley Event Center, home of the Northern Arizona Suns. Practices will take place at the Rolle Activity Center at NAU on Sept. 26, Sept. 27, Sept. 28 and Sept. 29, followed by the intra-squad scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. in Prescott Valley.
