The 10th annual “Take a Hike” Hiking Spree kickoff takes place Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Highlands Center for Natural History. Start the day with a morning hike at 7 a.m., then join the kickoff and a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. A mid-morning hike starts at 9:30 a.m.

The 2017 trail maps with hiking tips are available at the Highlands Center. Complete black-and-white map packets are $5, colored packets are $10.

The Hiking Spree has always been about getting people of all ages off the couch and out into nature to enjoy the beautiful trails of the Central Highlands. Over the past 10 years, thousands of hikers have discovered new trails, vistas and special spots to connect with the wonders of the natural world.

Hike at least eight of 12 specially chosen trails between Saturday, Sept. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 12. Then return your completed form to the Benson Family Nature Store at the Highlands Center by Dec. 12 to be entered into a prize drawing. The winning ticket will win a $200 gift card to The Hike Shack.

Completers of at least eight trails are eligible to purchase a specially designed medallion costing $5 that can be mounted to any hiking stick.

Whether you do all 12 trails or just a few, the Hiking Spree provides the maps — and perhaps the motivation — to get more active and explore all the region has to offer.
