Sept 7 Prescott Idol finale

You know it's summer in Prescott when musicians take the stage on the Yavapai County Courthouse Square. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the Summer Concert Series, produced by the Prescott Downtown Partnership (PDP), offers free entertainment in the warm evenings.

This year, Friday night concerts will be cut back from six to four as Yavapai County reduced the number of available days in any effort to preserve the lawn.

“We have a stronger line-up of jazz musicians this year,” said Kendall Jasper, director of the PDP. “We’ve got some of the best guys in town.”

They perform Tuesday nights, starting at 6 p.m.

Thursdays are Prescott Idol competitions (see below), with the exception of the third Thursday of the month, when the Central Arizona Concert Band performs.

Four Friday nights, June 2, July 7, and Aug. 4 and 25, local bands are on the bill.

“This year for the first time in a number of years, we’re able to pay a small stipend to the bands,” Jasper said. “That’s made them very happy.”

Prescott Idol rolls into 7th year

The popular Prescott Idol series of live concerts almost outlived its Fox-TV namesake, “American Idol," which was resuscitated by the ABC television network for the coming season.

Once again, the shows will be held most Thursdays, from June 1 through Aug. 31.

Each week, as many as 20 contestants compete to see who advances to the finale. The audience can vote at the show or online at for a week after the show.

The top two acts each week move on to the Sept. 7 finale show.

The competitions, held at the Courthouse Square in Prescott, will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 1; June 8; June 22; June 29; July 13; July 27; Aug. 3; Aug. 10; Aug. 24 and Aug. 31.
