Chino Valley Cougar Archers enjoy nationals trip to Kentucky
The 2017 National Archery in the Schools (NASP) National Competition, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, hosted a record 14,992 archers the week of May 7.
Chino Valley Cougar Archers sent 18 students to represent Del Rio Elementary and Heritage Middle School. Many students shot their personal-best target score, giving the Heritage team a qualifying score of 3,057, just enough to pass the 3,049 points needed, to attend the World tournament held in Orlando, Florida, in July.
Both Heritage (1,476; minimum of 1,380) and Del Rio (1,282; 1,280) shot well enough to also qualify for the 3D World competition.
“Our team is still getting over the shock of going to Louisville for Nationals, so we won’t be attending Worlds this year,” Chino Valley Cougar Archers coach Randi Diskin said. “We can’t extend enough thanks to administration, family members and the tri-city community for helping these kids afford such an incredible experience. As a coach, I am proud of the extra dedication and focus it took to practice and prepare to get there and do so well! I’m also thrilled to have behind me a plane ride with several students and parents who hadn’t flown before!”
