The American Legion Auxiliary of Gary Streeter American Legion Post 108 would like to remind the community of the upcoming distribution of poppies, beginning May 26, that will be available in front of Ace Hardware, Fry’s Food Market and Safeway Food Market.
Members of the auxiliary and post will be offering handmade poppies 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Donations are not required to receive a poppy; however, all donations go to support veterans and their families.
The poppy program is the oldest and probably the best known of the American Legion’s many programs. It began in 1924, when it was noted that there was a presence of red poppies among rows of white crosses on the deserted battlefields of western Belgium and northern France.
The poem, “In Flanders Fields,” is a reminder of those who have passed. It is a continuing mission to remember those who have perished during all the wars and conflicts that this country has been involved with. Veterans are honored annually by distributing red poppies of remembrance.
