Letter: GOP should take a stand
To my Republican neighbors:
The next four years will be a period of change in our country, state and town. I find many of the proposed and enacted changes disturbing, and I believe that many of you agree. I ask you to think about what is coming …. The Prescott Public Library faces more cuts even though it serves thousands of residents. The Arizona legislature continues to defund traditional schools in favor of for-profit, private and religious schools. The greatest changes will be coming from the federal government. Secretary Pruitt has overruled his own agencies recommendation that a pesticide, chlorpyrifos, be banned for farm use [scientists believe it is a health threat, much like DDT]. Your private online information can now be sold, thanks to Senator Flake.
If President Trump’s budget passes, affected programs include; Meals on Wheels, WIC, after-school programs, and Great Lakes Airlines. Student loans will be more expensive, funds for medical/scientific research will dry up, the Endowment for the Arts and Humanities will be eliminated, and the Public Broadcasting System will be defunded. Most disturbing is Trump’s call for the elimination of the Clean Air Act, clean water regulations, and withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Is that really what you want?
As Republicans, you have more influence over your party’s elected officials. If you disagree with what is happening, please call your representatives at every level of government and state your views. If you remain silent, you are condoning these actions.
