Patterson’s buzzer beater sends NAZ Suns to 9th straight loss
RENO, Nev. — Elijah Millsap scored 22 points, including a pair of free throws to put the Suns ahead by 1 in overtime with 4 seconds to play, but Reno’s Lamar Patterson hit a 25-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer, handing Northern Arizona its ninth straight loss in a 91-89 overtime heartbreaker.
Millsap shot 7 of 21 from the field, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals, but 20 of his 22 points came in the first three quarters for the Suns, which shot just 38 percent from the field (33-86), including a 9 of 34 mark (26%) from beyond the arc.
Patterson scored a game-high 31 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field, including a perfect 9 for 9 from the free-throw line, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists.
Northern Arizona (10-10) is now 2-1 on the season against the Bighorns, with the first two wins coming in Prescott Valley on Nov. 25 (95-85) and Dec. 3 (130-106).
Other standouts for the Suns included Johnny O’Bryant, who just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Askia Booker scored 15 points and had 11 assists.
For Reno (7-13), Isaiah Cousins scored 23 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field, while Skal Labissiere chipped in with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Northern Arizona returns to Prescott Valley for a two-game home stand beginning Tuesday, Jan. 10, against Oklahoma City. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
