On Saturday, Feb. 4, eight Prescott-area chess players played 56 chess games, each with only five minutes on special timers. Tom Green of Prescott topped the field with 10.5 points. He received $60 for 10 wins, one draw, and only three losses in the Prescott Chess Club Blitz #3. Green is currently the 42nd best Blitz player in the United States, 65 or older. Henry Ebarb of Prescott is currently ranked 59th in the U.S., 65 or older. After this event, Thomas Keenan and David Steeves, both of Prescott, are likely to add their names to the top 100 Blitz players in the U.S., 65 or older. The four Prescott chess players are likely to be among the top 100 for their age in the U.S. Dan Tyler of Prescott was the second-place finisher. He scored 9.5 points and won $30. Toby Ebarb of Phoenix was the top Class C player, 8.5 points, and won $25. Phil Ebarb of Prescott was the top Class D player with 5 points. He won $25. The next Prescott Chess Club event will be Quads #10 at the Pine Cone on Saturday, Feb. 25. A scholastic chess tournament will be held at Yavapai College on Sauturday, April 1. The next Blitz tournament is planned for Saturday, April 29. Club members regularly meet at the Wild Iris at 2 p.m. on Mondays and Saturdays. Anyone interested in chess is welcome.
