PRESCOTT — The Yavapai County Medical Examiner has confirmed that human remains found last month near Bagdad are those of Larry J. Powers, who went missing in 2007, said Dwight D’Evelyn, Sheriff’s spokesman.

YCSO detectives flew a drone over the area, Powers’ mining claim, last year and spotted a depression in the soil.

A forensic dig turned up human remains.

Detectives have long suspected Anthony Richards, an associate of Powers, of murdering him, D’Evelyn said.

An investigation of Richards resulted in a 23-count indictment that accused him of trafficking in stolen property, theft of a handgun, theft of a credit card, and 19 counts of identity theft, all with victim Larry Powers, who had been declared dead by a California court in 2012.

Richards was arrested in Oregon, and, in May 2016, was brought back to Yavapai County.

Richards is still in custody on a $100,000 bond, and “first-degree murder charges are pending,” D’Evelyn said.
