The Democratic Women of the Prescott Area (DWPA) organized a children’s book drive for Taylor Hicks School recently. The project was led by Val and Larry Meads (members of DWPA and Prescott Indivisible), and the book donation of over $300 was presented to Taylor Hicks fourth-grade teachers, Roberta Runyan and April Herzig Dec. 20.

Some of the book titles: Lynne Cheney’s New York Times bestselling illustrated history, “The Story of Our Constitution,” as well as many other award winners and best sellers, among them: “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “The Story of Ferdinand” and “The Lorax.”

The DWPA understands that the public schools in the Prescott area and in Arizona are in a funding crisis. This book donation is only the beginning of the work the DWPA plans to do to help public schools get the funding they need so they can fill the libraries with the variety of books that help provide a well-rounded education for children. The DWPA supports Save Our Schools (SOS) and believes that while private donations to schools are welcome and generous, the public schools in our communities should be self-sustaining, autonomous with funds available to pay teachers and support staff competitive salaries, invest in building and classroom improvements and other academic resources that will help Arizona public schools prosper and turn out well educated students that will be ready for higher education or vocational schools.
