“Christmas in Harmony” is the title of one of two short plays to be presented by the Silver Tales Readers’ Theater Ensemble at the 11 a.m. service of Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 945 Rancho Vista Drive, Prescott. A rural Indiana Quaker congregation decides to give a progressive nativity scene, complete with shag carpeting and geese, producing surprising results. The play was written by a Quaker minister and adapted by Elaine Jordan. A second play, entitled “The Christmas Police” will also be performed. Mark Mathewson will add festive music of the season to the service.

The Ensemble’s mission is to bring humor and nostalgia to senior audiences. Silver Tales has performed its 2017 holiday program recently at Highgate, Brookdale, and Granite Gate. It has upcoming performances at the Arizona Pioneers’ Home and for OLLI at YC Library Community Room. Contact Dyan Harper for information at dyanandtom18@gmail.com.

Emmanuel, PV United Methodist present musical

Two directors, two choirs, two accompanists, two churches combine this Sunday for one beautiful musical in Prescott Valley.

Gene Fougner, music director at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and Mary Roberts, choir director at Prescott Valley United Methodist, have been working since October with their respective choirs to perform Joseph M. Martin’s “Invitation to a Miracle” at both churches this Sunday.

Fougner explained each choir is a little light in certain sections. By coming together with 17 singers from each church, the choirs have strong four-part harmony, plus it’s fun to work together. He said it’s been a goal of his to have joint performances with several churches and music groups.

The first performance will be at 8:15 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 7743 E. Long Look Drive, and the second is at Prescott Valley United Methodist Church, 8944 E. Sommer Drive, Prescott Valley. The choirs are accompanied by two talented keyboard players: Cathy Namock at Emmauel, and Laura Taylor at PV United Methodist. Four Emmanuel handbell ringers, and two Emmanuel narrators, Kathy Austin and Peter Steele.

Nine musical numbers are interspersed with scripture readings and other narration, so the 45-minute musical will be most of the worship service at both locations. All are invited to come and enjoy at either service.

Emmanuel celebrates Advent, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 25-hour stretch Advent in the morning, and Christmas at night. It’s strange, but true.

Every year, the dates for Advent, the season of preparation for Christmas, fluctuate because Christmas falls on different days of the week. This year, Advent started as late as possible, Sunday, Dec. 3, so the last Sunday of Advent falls on Christmas Eve morning.

At Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Prescott Valley, that means five worship services from Sunday to Monday morning: one combined Sunday morning service at 9:30 a.m., and three Christmas Eve services at 5:30, 8 and 11 p.m. In addition, the church will gather for Christmas Day worship at 10:15 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch for all who worship that morning.

Each of the evening services is a candlelight service, meaning the service closes with the celebration of Jesus’ birth by the light of candles held by each worshiper. The 5:30 p.m. early Christmas Eve worship is typically more family friendly, with special music at 8 p.m., and the final service ending at midnight to bring in Christmas Day.
