Re: City Council considers climate change agreement submitted by citizen petition, 4/25/17.
A big thank-you to the City Council for being the adults in the room, not giving in to the demands of chicken-little climate alarmists, and declining to sign on to a feel-good, do-nothing agreement. (BTW, Council Member Wilcox was the only member to support this proposal, something to keep in mind as she has announced that she will be running for mayor.)
Those aspects of the proposed agreement that reflect local actions that could be taken to benefit the local environment are already part of the action plan and ethos of the city, or could be if/when brought up for specific consideration. As such, that portion of the agreement is redundant or unnecessary.
The other aspects of the proposed agreement are political, controversial, and outside the sphere of city action or influence (other than to be used as an arguing point by activists attempting to influence state/federal actors; eg. “why yes, Senator, a cap-and-trade carbon tax scheme must be passed, see how many cities agree!”).
We should not be sucked into that sort of political gamesmanship. Let’s take care of the things that need taking care of locally. We’ve already got plenty on our plate.
