Enthusiastic applause poured out of the Yavapai College Prescott campus community room over and over April 17 as 19 top students accepted praise and awards for academic excellence and achievement. The occasion: the annual Evening of Recognition celebration of student success.

Welcoming the crowd of educators and family and friends of the honorees, YC Vice President for Instruction and Student Development, Dr. Ron Liss, said he relishes the celebrations that accompany student achievement. “This is the time of year I treasure more than any other because we start to celebrate as we work toward the end of the year.”

Among the celebrants was Bonnie Celestin-Langlois, winner of the evening’s highest honor, the President’s Award for Excellence.

The aspiring marine biologist was honored for her stellar grade point average (GPA) and her multiple volunteer pursuits, including Teen Maze and Circle L Animal rescue.

“I’m incredibly honored and gratified to be receiving this award,” Celestin-Langlois said.

The Vice President’s Award for Academic Excellence went to Sandi Timm, a YC Medical Assistance student who maintains a perfect GPA while working full time and raising a family.

The 2017 President’s Outstanding Alumni Award was presented to Susie Check, a 2004 YC graduate who works at the college’s Career and Technical Education Center in Prescott (CTEC).

Check was honored for helping CTEC “gain prominence as the state’s premier technical education and training program and for working tirelessly with the YC Foundation to secure scholarship support for CTEC students.”

Also honored for winning All-Arizona Academic Team scholarships were Prescott campus students Cassondra Frederiksen, Jennifer Kelly and Mishael Umlor.
