The final 24 Prescott Idol 2016 contenders faced off at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Sept. 1.
D.L. Harrison emerged victorious after singing “Stay” by Rihanna.
Overall, Harrison beat out 150 tough competitors to claim this year’s title.
“As a performer on a regular basis, I had some confidence,” Harrison said. “I thought I’d probably place like third. But when he called me at the last minute, I was like ‘wait, did I hear him right?’”
Harrison has been playing music since he was 9 years old. He started singing and playing professionally about 18 years ago. He currently heads the D.L. Harrison Band and does some solo work when he can.
As the winner, Harrison received a large trophy and gets a spot to come back and perform at the finale each year. Grenax Broadcasting, the radio company that hosts Prescott Idol every year, will also promote his performances, music releases and anything else he decides to do musically going forward, said Melissa Byrne, Grenax Broadcasting Regional Manager.
“That’s all I really wanted to do coming into this,” Harrison said. “Just get my name out there.”
Prescott Idol will be back for its eighth year in 2017 — registration starts in May and the competition starts in June.
