Eastern AZ spikers eliminate Yavapai, 3-2, in district playoff

PRESCOTT – The Yavapai College volleyball team will not repeat as National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Region I/District C champions in 2016.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Walraven Gym, Eastern Arizona College eliminated the defending champ Roughriders, 3-2, in a district playoff. The Gila Monsters will advance to the district championship match at regular-season Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) winner Arizona Western this Friday, Nov. 4, in Yuma. First serve is at 7 p.m.

The Region I/District C champion automatically qualifies for the NJCAA National Tournament Nov. 17-19 at Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyoming.

The Roughriders lost to Eastern 21-25, 25-12, 18-25, 27-25, 11-15 in a marathon match.

Eastern improved its record to 22-8 overall, while Yavapai finished the season at 18-11. Both teams had concluded the conference campaign with 11-5 records and were tied for second place in the conference’s Division I standings.

Western won the league with a 14-2 record (25-2 overall). The Matadors’ lone losses came toward the end of the season, as they succumbed 3-0 at Chandler-Gilbert and 3-2 versus Eastern at home in late October.

Yavapai lost all three of its meetings against Western this season, including 3-2 and 3-0 setbacks Sept. 16 and 17, respectively, in Prescott, and 3-0 in the regular-season finale Oct. 26 in Yuma.

Eastern, which extended its winning streak to six matches on Wednesday, compiled a 0-3 record against Yavapai in the regular season. The Roughriders swept Eastern Sept. 1 at home and won in five games in matches on Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 in Thatcher.

Yavapai’s Tilley, Alebic earn All-Conference, All-Region honors (Oct. 31)

Yavapai College setter Jordan Tilley and outside hitter Iva Alebic garnered 2016 All-Arizona Conference and All-Region I, Division I first-team honors on Monday, Oct. 31.

Tilley was also named All-Arizona Conference Setter of the Year.

Roughriders right-side hitter Kaitlyn Yost claimed All-Arizona Conference honorable-mention honors.
