Obituary: Arthur Lyle Carnal

Arthur Lyle Carnal was born in the Colorado Rocky Mountains in 1920. His love of these mountains, nature and especially horses, forever guided his life.

Lyle was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in both the Atlantic and south Pacific during WWII. Following the war, he married Dorothy, a beauty who was his life partner. Together they ranched in Colorado and Arizona before settling in Tempe in the late 1950s. They later formed Siesta Realty and Siesta Construction where many homes were listed, sold and constructed over the next 40 years. Lyle fought fiercely to preserve low-density housing in south Tempe and was successful in co-developing horse properties such as Calle de Caballos, Buena Vista Ranchos and Circle G Ranches. Lyle and Dorothy retired to Skull Valley in 1995 where they relaxed with their menagerie of animals in the pastoral countryside. Lyle was a spiritual, curious man, both interested and interesting. He was generous, witty and charming with friends of every age. Always creative, at age 90 he wrote his autobiography, “Son of the San Juans.”

Lyle aged with dignity and forbearance, finally graduating with honors from the school of life on May 8, 2016. Predeceased by Dorothy in 2012, he is survived by his daughters, Dorothy (Harrold) Waits, Linda Whatley, Patti (Marty) Hulsebos; dearest friend Allison (Phillip) Dixon; grandchildren, Leslie Waits, Stephanie (Steve) Jackson, Kati Whatley, Marc Whatley; great grandchildren, Chelsea, Haley, Cort and Shea Jackson; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend and caregiver, Mary Norman.

Services will be held at a later date in Montrose, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Granite Mountain Hospice, Prescott, Arizona. Condolences may be sent to www.wakelinbradshaw.com.
