Briefly: Beat the Heat tourney


VERDE VALLEY HEAT ELITE’S 16U TEAM won the 13-team 16U bracket of the Arizona Amateur Softball Association (ASA) ‘Beat the Heat’ Tournament in Prescott this past weekend of June 18 and 19. Although the squad is the called the Verde Valley Heat, there are players on the team from all over northern Arizona, including Prescott Valley, Prescott, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Sedona, Camp Verde, Winslow and Payson. The girls won both of their pool play games on June 17 (20-12 against Hotshots Elite; 8-0 against Prescott Lady Hawks). In their first game of bracket play, the Heat Elite beat the Bullhead City Heat (9-2). On June 19, the Heat Elite won three straight games on their march towards the championship: 9-0 vs. AZ Hotshots Elite, 5-4 vs. AZ Desert Kaos and 9-2 vs. the AZ Bombers in the championship game. Next up, Verde Valley Heat Elite will travel to Denver for the Triple Crown Sports Colorado Sparkler from June 27-July 3. Upon their return to Arizona, they’ll compete at the 9 Star Sports Cool Pines Tournament in Flagstaff on July 9 and 10.


THE ANTELOPE HILLS MEN’S GOLF CLUB played its June 20 tournament at the South Course at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott, with the format being ‘2-Man Total.’ In the first flight, the team of Perry Huyck and Ken Brack took low gross with a 149, while a low net of 141 went to Leon Kelly and Don Stever. In the second flight, Bryan Elliott and Bill Reimers fired a 171 for low gross. A 140 was good for low net by Andy Ozols and Don Clark. In the third flight, Stephen Sauer and Tedd Peck shot a 179 for low gross, and a low net of 147 went to Bill Bailey and Norm Pierson. On June 22, the Club played its tournament on the North Course with the format being the ‘Good, Bad and Ugly.’ This format is a four-man team event in which various scores are used on the par 3s, 4s and 5s. In the first flight, the team of Bob Burbridge, Jerry Shayne, Andy Ozols and Brad Brightwell took low gross, with low net going to Ken Brack, Bobby Watson, Hank Engert and Mike Sherman. In the second flight, low gross went to Herb Keeling, Jim Brewer, Bill Huth and Ron Weiss; low net went to Barry Tull, Durwood Nixon, Chuck Gibson and Charley Shipman.
