Business owner, artist and skater Matt Joannes is working to prop up the skateboarding community by hosting a skate competition on Saturday, June 25.
Simply titled Prescott Skate Competition, the free public event will take place at the Mike Fann Community Skate Park on the corner of East Willis Street and South Arizona Avenue from noon to 6 p.m. It’s open to all ages for both competing and spectating.
“I’ve skated my whole life,” Joannes said. “I’m really trying to make this a community thing. I want there to be some kind of positive activity going on out here for kids rather than them turning to like drug-use and whatnot.”
The event will somewhat lineup with Go Skateboarding Day, a worldwide celebration of skateboarding that takes place on June 21 every year.
In addition to skating, there will be food, several raffle drawings and live music.
Joannes’ business, King Pearl Clothing, has been in Prescott for about four years and focuses on keeping the hand-drawn arts alive.
All of the designs for the clothing are hand created and crafted before going into production, according to the website.
Those who wear a King Pearl product to the event will receive a free raffle ticket.
