Prescott Unified School District’s (PUSD) Pre-K and Preschool, Discovery Gardens, is excited to return for another year at the Washington School location, 300 E. Gurley St.

Discovery Gardens has been preparing local children for the next big step, kindergarten, since 1975.  Recent studies show that children who go to preschool are more successful in later grades than children who don’t attend early childhood programs. Preparing your child to be ready for all the challenges that face them in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive and motor skills are  important to ensure kindergarten  readiness.

Discovery Gardens’ framework incorporates the Arizona early learning standards that have been set by the Arizona Department of Education and PUSD. The Pre-K standards have been incorporated as part of a broader framework in pre-reading, writing and mathematics.  In collaboration with the district’s kindergarten teachers, Discovery Gardens also addresses concerns regarding areas that kindergarten teachers have observed students needing reinforcement for kindergarten readiness. School readiness is a key concept in aligning Pre-K standards with elementary and secondary education standards because they can help measure important foundational skills for achievement in later grades.

Discovery Gardens will continue the introduction to the early learning standards stressing developmentally appropriate learning activities for young children.  The standards can be promoted through play and exploration activities, talking about  picture books, and are embedded in all of the daily activities. These standards are used to promote differentiated, engaging and individualized instruction. At Discovery Gardens, teachers recognize that every child learns and grows differently. Through observation and assessment, our teachers are able to modify and adjust the daily curriculum to accommodate each child’s unique learning abilities.

The school has been recognized by Quality First and First Things First for achieving and maintaining a Quality Star Rating. Discovery Gardens also conducts free monthly developmental screenings that include: academic, social-emotional, adaptive, language, motor and vision and hearing.

Discovery Gardens is now accepting applications for Pre-K and Preschool enrollment. School starts on Aug. 4, and follows the district’s calendar. Please contact Stacy Williams at 928-442-1283 or for more information.
