The Alta Vista Garden Club’s Beautification Committee, represented by Cheryl Booth and Mary Ann Mira, presented a check for $400 to Kyle Short, teacher at Northpoint Expeditionary Learning Academy, to support the high school’s garden and greenhouse project. Students study agriculture in an intensive, hands-on unit of study for two weeks. Kyle teaches the course, which involves planting, researching, and maintaining plants. They have a water catchment system that empties into a cistern in the greenhouse, and students access the water by riding a bicycle that is attached to a pump/hose/sprinkler wand to water the plants! Very ingenious The money will be used to purchase more plants and tools. Kyle will submit a follow-up report to the club to let us know specifically what the money was used for. The students we spoke to absolutely LOVE to garden, and many have developed gardens at home as a result of their school project!
