None of the 154 Wal-Mart stores slated to close in the U.S. as a part of the company's "sharpened focus on portfolio management" are in Arizona.
In October 2015, the company said it was undergoing a review of its portfolio to ensure its assets are aligned with its strategy. An announcement made Friday, Jan. 15, was a result of this review, stating that the company is closing 269 stores worldwide.
The 154 U.S. closures include 102 of its Walmart Express stores, 23 Neighborhood Market stores, 12 Supercenters, four Sam's Club locations, six discount stores and seven stores in Puerto Rico.
The company said 95 percent of the stores impacted are within 10 miles of another Wal-Mart.
At the same time, the company intends on opening a slew of new stores. Domestically, it plans to open 50 to 60 Supercenters and 85 to 95 Neighborhood Markets in Fiscal 2017, which begins Feb. 1. In the same period, Sam's Club plans to open in seven to 10 new locations. Internationally, Wal-Mart intends to open between 200 and 240 stores during the coming year.
Bringing ramen to Prescott
When Guy and Celeste Agena first visited Prescott a few years ago from Hawaii, they fell in love with the area.
They were here to check out Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where their son is now a student, and soon decided to buy a home in the area. Soon after, Celeste, a former airline attendant, noticed there wasn't any ramen restaurants to be found and decided she was going to get one going.
"Ramen has been trending," Celeste said. "It's catching on more in the United States. It's always been a big deal for years and years in Japan."
The restaurant will be called Kiyoshi Ramen 'N' More and will be in the corner lot of the Safeway shopping center along Willow Creek Road (previously Aloha Hawaiian BBQ).
The couple are currently renovating the space and expect it to be open sometime in the next few weeks.
Christmas in Prescott only online
Owners of Christmas in Prescott (a.k.a. The Christmas Store) have closed their physical store front, 1235 Willow Creek Road, in Prescott, and will now only be doing Internet sales.
"Unfortunately it has not been beneficial to operate the store even though it has been a lot of fun," said owner Donna Albus. "We truly appreciate the Prescott residents and those who traveled here shopping at the store and we will miss visiting with you. We have purchased a warehouse in Prescott Valley and will eventually move all of the internet merchandise over there."
Albus said her family will have a special sale for closeout items at drastically reduced prices early this year. There will be an advertisement in the newspaper, under garage sales, to announce the sale date. There is also a note on their website's store location page.
The Albuses have had a website for their store since 2006. The website address is http://www.christmasinprescott.com.

The store offers audio books, bookmarks and unique book ends.

A grand opening celebration will take place February 5 and 6.
