Yavapai College Notes: Roughriders’ soccer listed at No. 8 in preseason poll

PRESCOTT – Yavapai College’s men’s soccer team is ranked eighth in the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Division I preseason Top 20 poll released on Monday, Aug. 8.

In 2015, the Roughriders won the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference’s (ACCAC) regular-season title before abruptly ending their campaign in the NJCAA regional playoffs.

The 2016 edition of Roughriders soccer will feature 26 new players and only two returners, including sophomore defenders Juan Ramirez of Aloha, Oregon, and Jacob Malach of Boise, Idaho.

Yavapai’s 28th season kicks off with two conference road matches – at Chandler-Gilbert Aug. 23 and at Glendale Aug. 27 – prior to the home opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30, versus Paradise Valley at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley.

All home matches start at 6 p.m., with six games scheduled for Prescott Valley and six slated for Ken Lindley Field in Prescott. The Roughriders own a 288-14-3 all-time record at home.

The complete 2016 preseason Top 20 poll is as follows. It’s worth noting that defending Region I champion and ACCAC member Pima of Tucson is listed at No. 5. Other ACCAC teams in the poll include Arizona Western of Yuma at No. 11 and Phoenix College at No. 17. …

ATHLETIC PASSES for Yavapai College’s 2016-17 fall and spring sports teams are on sale now at the college’s campus in Prescott.

An All-Sports Pass, which includes approximately 50 regular-season events in men’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball, costs $90 per adult and $60 per student/military veteran/senior citizen (ages 55 and older).

Passes are not valid for any postseason games and/or matches. Single-game tickets, purchased at the gate on game days, cost $3 per adult and $2 per student/military veteran/senior citizen (ages 55 and over). YC students with a valid ID, staff and faculty members, as well as those ages 6 and under, get in free.


MEMBERS OF THE 2016 YAVAPAI COLLEGE SOCCER TEAM will conduct two free youth soccer clinics, including this Saturday, Aug. 13, at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley and again on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott.

The clinics will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. on both days. Boys and girls ages 5-16 are eligible to participate. No registration is required.

If possible, each participant should bring his or her own soccer ball. All players will receive a special soccer souvenir gift.

Yavapai’s coaching staff encourages youngsters to meet the 2016 Roughriders several days before their season home opener.
