CHINO VALLEY – Chino Valley High’s baseball team honored six seniors in style on Tuesday, April 19, shutting out Mohave to stay unbeaten in Division III, Section V.
On Senior Day at Nesbitt-Pratt Field, the D-III No. 28-ranked Cougars upset No. 16 Mohave behind two of those seniors, starting pitcher Jacob Clawson and Israel Acosta.
Clawson allowed two hits, striking out three and walking one, in five innings of work to claim the victory. Acosta went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to pace the offense.
Hector Casas came on in relief, tossing two shutout innings in the sixth and seventh.
Also standing out at the plate for the hosts was Brian Sutton, who went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Chino plated two runs in the second and one in the fourth, and made the lead stick.
With two games remaining in the 2016 regular season, the Cougars are 9-8 overall in power-point games and 5-0 in section.
Chino will visit fellow section frontrunner Lee Williams at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21.
Prescott 10, Arcadia 7 (Mon.)
PRESCOTT – Prescott High’s baseball team snapped a two-game losing streak, beating Arcadia in division play Monday, April 18, at home.
The Division II No. 18-ranked Badgers knocked off the No. 12 Titans behind the pitching and hitting of Matt Mendibles.
Mendibles picked up the victory, allowing five runs on seven hits, striking out two and walking four, in four innings. He helped his cause at the dish by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.
Prescott’s Jose Chairez wielded a scorching bat, too, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Justin Warren came on in relief of Mendibles and pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two.
The Badgers (9-5 overall record in power-point games; 4-4 in D-II, Section V) have four contests left on their regular-season schedule. They will visit Westview (4-10, 1-7) at 3:45 p.m. today, April 20, in Avondale.
Bagdad 5, Mayer 3
BAGDAD – The Division V No. 1-ranked Bagdad High baseball team remained undefeated in Division V, Section III, edging Mayer on Tuesday, April 19.
Owning a 5-0 record in section and a 13-1 mark in power-point games, Bagdad is in the driver’s seat to claim the section crown.
Israel Loveall got the win on the mound, allowing three runs on two hits, one of which was a three-run homer. Israel Loveall (1-for-3, triple, RBI, run scored), Ben Loveall (1-for-3, RBI double, run scored) and Tony Ventura (1-for-2, RBI, run scored) led Bagdad offensively.
The Sultans have two regular-season games left, both at home. They will face Northland Prep at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, April 21.
PREP SOFTBALL
Bradshaw Mtn. 22, Independence 0
PRESCOTT VALLEY – Bradshaw Mountain High’s softball team drubbed winless Independence on Tuesday, April 19, in its 2016 home finale, upping its Division III, Section IV record to 7-2.
The Bears will visit section opponent Northwest Christian at 3:45 p.m. Friday, April 22, in Phoenix.
Chino Valley 16, Monument Valley 7 (Mon.)
KAYENTA – Chino Valley High’s softball team improved its record to 4-2 in Division IV, Section I and 9-5 in power-point games, blistering Monument Valley on Monday, April 18.
Offensively for the Cougars, Jadyn Clawson went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored. MacKenzie Delbridge (3-for-6, two RBIs, two runs scored), Mariah Shepp (3-for-4, four runs scored) and Serena Reed (2-for-5, RBI) aided in the effort.
Keigan Willingham won on the pitching slab.
Chino will play host to Hopi in section action at 3:45 p.m. today, April 20.
PREP TENNIS
Prescott girls sweep Bradshaw, win section
PRESCOTT – On Senior Day Tuesday, April 19, Prescott High’s girls’ tennis team swept rival Bradshaw Mountain, capturing the 2016 Division II, Section V title while winning its third straight match to end the regular season.
Prescott learns its D-II state playoff seeding when the final power-point rankings are released on Thursday, April 21.
Prescott boys 7, Bradshaw Mtn. 2
PRESCOTT VALLEY – Prescott High’s boys’ tennis team concluded its 2016 regular season with this Division II, Section V victory at rival Bradshaw Mountain on Tuesday, April 19.
The D-II No. 17-ranked Badgers bounced back less than 24 hours after falling at Ironwood, 6-3. That setback had snapped a three-match winning streak.
Prescott improved its record to 10-4 overall and 9-1 in section, while Bradshaw dipped to 6-8 overall and 4-6 in section.
In singles, Prescott’s Jack Darr (6-2, 6-0), Brandon Klever (6-4, 6-4), Luke Hardy (6-0, 6-0), Julio Ortega (6-2, 6-0) and Jack Clark (6-1, 6-0) won. At No. 1 singles, Bradshaw’s Dawson Turner defeated Brandon Nguyen 6-4, 6-3.
Bradshaw won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Prescott’s Nos. 2 and 3 tandems, in Darr-Ortega and Hardy-Colton Carter, were victors.
Prescott and Bradshaw will learn their state playoff fates when the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) releases its final rankings on Thursday, April 21.
PREP TRACK & FIELD
Farnsworth leads Chino at Wrangler Invite (April 15)
WICKENBURG – Chino Valley High’s track and field team overcame 20- to 30-mph winds at the Wrangler Invitational this past Friday, April 15, to place several of its athletes.
For the Cougars’ girls, Katie Farnsworth took second in the 400m in 1 minute and 4.4 seconds. Lauren Foster finished third (1:06.4) and Mya Pullins was fourth (1:06.6).
In the relays, Farnsworth, Foster, Pullins and Mercy Gonzales were second in the 4x800m in 11:15. Farnsworth, Foster, Pullins, and Abbie Golden placed fourth in the 4x100m (55.34 seconds).
Becca Tupper claimed fourth in the 3200m (13:33). Golden placed sixth in the high jump (4 feet, 5 inches).
Chino’s boys were led by Gavin Thompson, who was fourth in the 200m (24.51 seconds) and seventh in the 300m hurdles (44.78). The 4x400m relay team claimed sixth (4:04) and Brenden Tupper was eighth in the 3200m (11:04).
Prescott and Chino Valley will compete at the Yavapai County Championships this Friday, April 22, at Bradshaw Mountain High in Prescott Valley.
Prescott’s Mills sets another soph school record, makes state in 1600m (April 16)
PHOENIX – Prescott High track and field’s Makennah Mills set another sophomore class record in the 1600 meters while automatically qualifying for the Division II state meet at the Pioneer Invitational Saturday, April 16.
Mills crossed the finish line in fourth place in 5 minutes and 18.66 seconds. Her latest personal-best time broke her record that she had set at the Chandler Rotary meet in late March (5:22.17).
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Boulder Creek 3, Prescott boys 1
PRESCOTT – The Prescott High boys’ volleyball team’s overall record dropped to 3-6 on Tuesday, April 19, as Division I No. 1-ranked Boulder Creek won in four games.
Logan Smith and Colden Campbell tallied three kills apiece for the Badgers. Campbell and Smith also had two blocks each.
The Badgers will compete at the Dobson Invitational Tournament in Mesa on Friday, April 22.
