Mr. C.R. Shoemaker made a good argument recently, "Letter: Gun safety," that banning the Garand M1 rifle and similar weapons from re-importation is not the best approach for "common sense gun safety reforms." Since Mr. Shoemaker said it is hard to disagree with common sense reforms, would he be so kind as to tell us where he thinks a good starting point would be?
Another letter writer recently made a spurious claim about how small the percentage of accidental gun deaths are in America - well, no kidding! It only seems to be small when compared to our entire population. According to Bradycampaign.org our country suffers through an average of 31 murders, 151 assaults, 55 suicides, and 46 accidental injuries or deaths each and every day.
So, I respectfully request of the many area gun owners, where can we agree to start and get political support to begin a downward trend in these sad statistics?
