Chew on This: The Local appeals to organic tastes
Some people have a real craving for food that's grown organically, but many times finding a place is difficult. However, The Local, at 520 W. Sheldon St., Suite 4, is serving organically grown food for breakfast and lunch. Run by the original owner of the Firehouse Kitchen, the restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day except Wednesday.
Co-owners Sheryl Strong and Rob Mackey opened The Local because many people are paying more attention to their food and what's going into their bodies.
"GMOs are a big deal, people are starting to understand what they are," Strong said. "We felt we had a concept that the time was right. We try to source non-GMO organic food."
Opening through Kickstarter crowdfunding earlier this year, The Local has quickly become a local favorite, with about 40 percent of its business coming from regulars, Strong said. And new customers quickly become regulars.
What keeps bringing people back is the consistency, Strong said. The Local consistently has quality food with everything made to order, coupled with the dedicated staff, she said.
"People comment on us being such a team," Strong said, noting that everyone working there continually helps each other out. It makes it "team-oriented and friendly.
It's not difficult to see the popularity of The Local as it has an average rating of 4.5 based on reviews from the restaurant's Facebook page (40 reviews), yelp.com (76 reviews) and tripadvisor.com (137 reviews).
"Just be prepared to experience something truly special."
"I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Prescott."
"This is absolutely the most amazing breakfast place I've ever been to!"
"We don't often have breakfast or lunch in town, but The Local is our new go to spot."
"This is my new favorite restaurant in Prescott."
"I rarely give five stars to any establishment ... Four five star visits in a week ... I give up. You win. I'll be back."
The Local has not been advertising, Strong said. All the business has been attracted through word of mouth and social media. Strong added it's No. 1 on tripadvisor.com for Prescott and has been since its seventh week.
"We're pretty proud of that. A lot of people didn't believe in what we were doing, a lot of people said you can't do that, you're not going to be successful," she said. "There were naysayers out there and it was so gratifying to go to No. 1 on tripadvisor because that's the people speaking."
Not only does it bring her joy to see people happy with the restaurant's food, Strong added she loves how people are being educated on a healthy way to eat and still have it taste good. In fact, customers kept asking for the restaurant to be open for dinner.
On Friday, Nov. 13, The Local will be open for dinner for a special one-time event from 5 to 9 p.m.
"We've been talking about doing dinner once a month," chef Robert Mackey said. "We're going to do a Mexican Fiesta."
