Man faces manslaughter charge in student's death
PRESCOTT - The Yavapai County Attorney's Office has filed charges against the driver of a pickup truck that struck and killed a bicyclist in January.
Toby Beaty, 37, of Prescott was arrested Sunday, Oct. 18, and charged with manslaughter and two counts of misdemeanor DUI in connection with the death of Amber "Cricket" Harrington, Yavapai County Chief Deputy County Attorney Dennis McGrane said.
Harrington, 23, was killed after she was hit from behind by the pickup, just before 5 p.m. Jan. 16, on White Spar Road near Copper Basin Road. Harrington was from California and was a recent graduate of Prescott College.
Asked why there had been 10 months between the crash and the charges being filed, McGrane said "additional investigation" had to be done, and that "prosecutorial consideration," or contemplation of the case within the County Attorney's office, was also a factor.
Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said Beaty "self-surrendered at the Camp Verde jail" Sunday.
He's being held on a $250,000 bond.
