Local Rundown: Badgers' badminton drops Deer Valley, wins 5th straight

PREP BADMINTONPrescott 8, Deer Valley 1Prescott High's varsity badminton team registered its fifth consecutive victory Tuesday, Oct. 13, defeating Deer Valley in Glendale to improve to 7-1 overall and 7-0 in Division I, Section I.In singles play, Badgers' No. 1 player Lauren Mazzella swept Jovana Kuvac, 11-3 and 11-0. No. 2 Andie Gonzales also won handily, cruising past Valerie Sutton, 11-1 and 11-5.In other results for PHS: No. 3 Morgan Feingold defeated Kaycee Younap (9-11, 11-2, 11-7); No. 4 Sara Kosse beat Corey Imperanice (11-8, 11-13, 11-6); No. 5 Sydney Gonzales got past Kristianna Maillie (11-4, 6-11, 13-10); and No. 6 Megan Raiss swept Rachel Linden (13-10, 11-2).In varsity doubles, the Badgers' No. 1 duo of Gonzales and Feingold lost to Deer Valley in straight games, 15-17 and 9-15. However, No. 2 tandem Mazzella and Kosse won (15-2, 15-9), as did the No. 3 pairing of Gonzales and Raiss (15-8, 15-6).D-I No. 8-ranked Prescott continues on in section play at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the hometown squad hosts Horizon.PREP CROSS-COUNTRYChino Valley girls runners-up at Crusaders Invite in PhoenixChino Valley High's cross-country team ran well at the Crusaders Invitational in Phoenix Tuesday, Oct. 13, placing second with 50 points - only four points behind champion Valley Christian.Leading the Lady Cougars was Becca Tupper, who placed fifth with a time of 25 minutes and 40 seconds. Sandra Falls (10th, 26:08), Lizzy Tupper (11th, 26:08), Chloe Vallejo (17th, 28:17), Mya Pullins (22nd, 28:44) and Abbie Golden (23rd, 28:52) followed.Meanwhile, the Chino boys placed sixth out of 13 schools with 149 points. Brenden Tupper led the Cougars, placing 11th in 18:48. David Lemcke (21st, 19:58), David Gehman (32nd, 21:06), Christian Herb (47th, 22:28) and Alex Daniels (57th, 23:45) rounded out Chino's finishers.Next up, the Cougars compete in the 11th annual Yavapai County Cross-Country Championships Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.
