Roughriders get back on track with 3-1 win over Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. - After suffering a loss to No. 2-ranked and undefeated Glendale Community College last week that ended a seven-match Roughrider winning streak, the Yavapai College volleyball team went on the road and earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Eastern Arizona College on Wednesday night.

"It's a good conference win. Any of our conference teams can beat anyone on any night," third-year Yavapai College head coach Zach Shaver said. "We went on the road and beat a good team. I'm proud of them for battling."

Freshman outside hitter Iva Alebic led the Roughriders with 19 kills, 10 digs and one solo block while sophomore Paige Hamilton recorded an unbelievable .600 hitting percentage with 14 kills and added three blocks.

Yavapai College [14-5 Overall, 7-1 ACCAC] as a team recorded a .233 hitting percentage on Wednesday night and are hitting .170 as a team overall this season.

"That's pretty solid," Shaver said about his team's accuracy against Eastern Arizona. "It's typically our goal to hit over .200."

In game one, the Roughriders were tied with Eastern Arizona 20-20 but used a 5-3 run to take game one, 25-23.

In game two, Yavapai College led 7-3 but after a timeout, the Gila Monsters went on a 16-11 run, which led to a 26-24 win to tie the series at 1-1.

Both teams battled in games three and four, but the Roughriders were able to come out on top, 25-19 and 25-17.

Other top performers for Yavapai College include sophomore Kelsey Park with nine kills and four blocks to go along with a .389 hitting percentage and freshman setter Jordan Tilley racked up 45 assists along with one ace serve and 12 digs.

Sophomore libero Brooke Donnelly chipped in with 27 digs and two service aces.

Next up, the Roughriders will hit the road again Friday, Oct. 9, to play Central Arizona College. Yavapai College returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, to host Mesa Community College. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
