Chew on This: Scouts always prepared with good grub

Prescott residents looking for a gourmet lunch but want to spend some time away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area might want to check out Scouts Gourmet Grub. Voted Best of Prescott No. 1 in Sandwiches for eight years in a row, the eatery at 1144 Iron Springs Road provides a consistent menu comprising sandwiches along with soups, salads and pizzas.

Owners Terry and Dixie Huebner celebrated their seventh anniversary of owning Scouts Gourmet Grub in October, Terry said.

"The store has been here since 2001. A friend of mine started it from scratch," Terry said. "I was in the bread business and this was one of my accounts. One day he said he wanted to sell it, so we bought it, my wife and I."

An independent contractor since 1988, Terry said he loves the independence and feeling of gratification from seeing the restaurant succeed. He and Dixie are hands-on managers with a crew of usually three to four employees.

Because of Scouts' location, the restaurant isn't tourist oriented, Terry said. Rather, a large chunk of the business comes from regulars, with most of the clientele being the area's professionals.

"We're half a block from the hospital, beauty salons, dentists' offices," Terry said. "Our forte is walk-in trade and as many caters as you could possibly do because we have several affiliations with pharmaceutical sales reps from both Flagstaff and Phoenix as well as right there that order lunches for different offices."

Although the bulk of the eatery's business is from the regulars, new faces come in every week, Terry said. Most of them say they're a first timer and they're given a to-go menu, he said.

What keeps people coming back to Scouts Gourmet Grub is the consistent portions, Terry said.

"We don't cut back. Ever since we've owned the place, the sandwiches and salads are made to the same specs as they were when we bought the place," Terry said. "We've improved in some areas like our side salads are better than what they were at the time. The sandwiches that we've got on the menu were all on the menu when we bought the place, then we've added about nine more in the last seven years."

It's not difficult to see that the consistency makes Scouts Gourmet Grub well liked, as it has an average of four out of five stars from sites like yelp.com (21 reviews), tripadvisor.com (18 reviews) and zomato.com (three reviews).

"Their portions are huge and the quality of their ingredients is good. It's busy around lunch and the locals love this place, so they're doing something right!"

"I am not surprised that they have been rated best sandwich and deli many years in a row."

"Love my trips into town just so I can stop by for a sandwich."

"Best sandwich shop in Prescott."

Terry and Dixie are getting ready to enlarge the menu due to the lack of space to add anything else on the bottom, Terry said. They're also going to introduce iced coffee next spring.

Scouts Gourmet Grub is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. It's closed Sundays. The restaurant can be reached at 928-442-3336 and found at www.scoutsgourmetgrub.com.
