Suspect dead after YCSO-involved shooting; 5 being held in 'investigative custody'

COTTONWOOD - One man is dead after running from the scene of a traffic stop Saturday in Cottonwood, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

At 4:09 a.m. Saturday, a YCSO deputy made a traffic stop in Verde Village near Cottonwood for a traffic violation (equipment violation), according to a release from the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety.

A second deputy arrived shortly after to assist. While the six occupants of a Jeep SUV were being questioned, a male between 18 and 20 fled on foot, according to the report. He was chased by a deputy, and within minutes, according to the release, a YCSO dispatcher received a report from one of the deputies that shots were fired.

A preliminary investigation shows the deputy got into a physical altercation with the suspect, who sustained a fatal injury from a gunshot, according to the DPS.

The deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated locally.

The deceased's name has not been released. Five additional suspects were in "investigative custody" as of Saturday afternoon.

All of the suspects riding in the vehicle, including the deceased, were male and area residents, police said. One was a juvenile.

Police said the names of the officers involved will not be released this weekend.

The Department of Public Safety Officer Involved Shooting team is investigating the incident.
