Mayer man killed in highway crash

MAYER - A driver was killed Wednesday morning, March 11, when his Toyota SUV was struck from behind on Highway 69 as he headed north, a Department of Public Safety spokesman said.

Henry R. Wimberg, 83, of Mayer, was pronounced dead at the scene, spokesman Bart Graves said.

Details are limited, Graves said, but Wimberg's SUV was northbound at milepost 265, near I-17, when his vehicle was hit by a Ford SUV, also northbound, at about 7:20 a.m.

The Ford's driver was flown to John C. Lincoln hospital in north Phoenix, he said, but did not have the extent of the driver's injuries.

Graves said possible charges and the cause of the crash are unknown, and that the crash is still under investigation.
