PRESCOTT - After years of planning, a senior-housing project that won initial city approval in 2014 has begun phase one of what will be a several-year construction.

Fann Contracting and Granite Basin Engineering began working on the site's infrastructure this past week.

"We're grading the land and placing utilities, which will be followed by road work [a several month operation]," said Tom Biel, Touchmark executive director for Prescott and executive vice president for the entire company.

Touchmark has been in business since 1980 and owns 11 senior living communities, each slightly different to suit the areas they serve.

"We do not do cookie-cutter communities," Biel said. "Each one is designed in the style of the city that we're in. Here in Prescott, we will try to capture the Southwest and being a part of the Old West."

This location will span 44 acres overlooking Highway 69 near Wal-Mart. Much of the land will be left as green space, according to Biel.

Phase one will first see the construction of cottages by the end of this year. Construction of a central clubhouse will be finished in about a year, followed by the completion of a grand lodge in mid-2017.

The central club house will have a swimming pool and fitness area on the first level and food and beverage opportunities as well as community meeting rooms on the top floor. The grand lodge will feature mostly independent living quarters.

There will be a central park and each cottage will have space for outdoor activities.

After the initial phase, Biel says they will add some additional healthcare - such as memory care - and some additional independent living condo-style homes. Touchmark's discovery center - the company's way of referring to its sales office - at the intersection of Highway 69 and Lee Boulevard will be complete by the fall for interested parties to visit to go over housing options and ask questions.
