Learn improv with Mile High Comedy Theater
Last Friday, Mile High Comedy Theater split the sides of the Elks Theatre with their improvisational standup and sketch comedy. But just because the show's over, doesn't mean the laughter is. This Saturday, Jan 31, Mile High Comedy Theater is offering a free improvisational comedy class.
Director Cynthia Sobo said a free class is offered after every show so people can come in and check them out and learn some of the games the cast plays.
"It gives people who are shy or afraid the chance to jump right in," Sobo said, noting the class is a nice, safe and comfortable environment. "It's a stress reliever and it's fun."
According to Sobo, a handful of people usually show up to the classes following the performances, adding that the class gives a taste of the workshops Mile High Comedy Theater puts on every week. And Sobo said those who take the workshops could graduate into the main cast if they do well at the aspects of improvisational comedy, such as thinking on their feet and carrying a scene.
Workshops offered by Mile High Comedy Theater include Adult Comedy Improv on Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Stand-Up Comedy on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sobo said she is also looking to create a new beginners workshop group.
"If anyone has ever told you that you were funny, give it a try," Sobo said.
Although Saturday's class is free, Sobo said the workshops cost $30 per month, adding that the price is relatively low compared to classes in Phoenix.
Saturday's free class is at Switch Performing Arts Center, 107 East Hillside Ave. Workshops are also at the center.
