Obituary: Portia Rey
Portia Rey passed from this life on Dec. 17, 2014, as a result of an aggressive stroke shortly after a simple sinus surgery.
Portia was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Nov. 21, 1940, to Dr. James and Gladys Benepe. She was a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College with a degree in nursing and practiced her medical specialization in St. Paul, Minnesota, West Germany and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. In 2001, she retired from the medical field as the manager of a medical facility. She was a dedicated horse trainer specializing in dressage and vaulting. In retirement, she was very active as a volunteer with People Who Care and St. Luke's Outreach, Don't Spend Christmas Alone, Vestry and charitable fundraiser groups.
As an avid tennis player, she successfully participated in 12 Senior Olympics tennis games in Prescott.
Portia is survived by her loving husband Giorgio; daughters Erika and Alexandria; her sister Barbara; brother Tom; and two grandchildren. Her friendship will be deeply missed by her many friends and relatives.
A celebration of Portia's life will be 10:30 a.m. Jan. 24, 2015, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherds Lane, Prescott, Arizona, with inurnment in St. Luke's Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Luke's Outreach Program will be appreciated.
