Letter: Get involved!

EDITOR:

I am asking each of my Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren to encourage their parents and grandparents to become active in the Arizona political issue of whether the State government should spend an increased amount for Private prisons at the expense of reduction in educational money. Tell your parents you wish the state to spend more money for your education and not for private prisons to hold non-violent first offenders.

Even some Republican state lawmakers are opposed to Gov. Ducey's proposed 100 Million expenditure for more private prisons at the expense of reducing the funds available for education. This is Ducey's pay back for the "dark-campaign" funds he received from the private prison industry. Ask your parents if the cutting of educational funds is a worthy trade-off!

Yes, you may be worried about how to control the criminal activity in your community. Ask your parents is placing first time drug users in prison for years the solution.

Ask your parents to take a look at the very "Red States" of Texas and Utah where they have reformed their criminal statutes to handle juvenile and drug users with community based programs rather than incarceration for extended period for first time non-violent offenders which has significantly reduced crime in those states and reduced recidivism, thereby reducing the number of people with a criminal record, hence reducing their chance of future success as one who has an incarceration record.
