Back home, Yavapai baseball sweeps visiting Canadian club
The Yavapai College baseball team's brief home stand got off to a strong start Wednesday, Feb. 19.
After playing six straight games away from Prescott and facing four away games starting next week, Yavapai opened its four-game stand at Roughrider Park with a non-conference sweep of Thompson Rivers (Canada) by scores of 10-1 and 6-1.
In Wednesday's opener, sophomores Luke Doyle and Brock Hartley both went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Sophomore Willie Calhoun was 2-for-3, and sophomore Austin Paschke had two hits and two runs scored, along with belting his fourth homer of the spring.
Sophomore righty Will Jones was lights out on the mound, throwing five-plus innings and striking out seven to record his first victory of the year.
In the second game, freshman right-hander Caleb Doha took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and allowed just two hits overall while striking out five.
YC plated two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth.
John King, Doyle and Paschke each had two hits to pace the offense.
The Roughriders improved to 10-4 on the season.
Yavapai resumes conference play this Saturday, Feb. 21, when Central Arizona visits Prescott.
The doubleheader begins at noon.
