Outdoor movie program expands into May
This past summer, hundreds of Prescott Valley residents and neighbors enjoyed sitting outside in the cool June evenings to watch films on the Civic Center grounds, thanks to the Town of Prescott Valley's Movies Under the Stars program.
This year, the Arts and Culture Commission is opening up two more slots by beginning the program on the final two Thursdays in May - May 21 and May 28 - in addition to every Thursday in June. A&C Commission Chair Franki Gibson said this popular program is looking for sponsors, and also recommendations for movies.
"We invite you to let us know what movies you'd like to see," Gibson said at the commission's January meeting.
In the past, the town has shown G and PG rated movies, including Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, Wizard of Oz, Sandlot, Ghostbusters, ET The Extra-Terrestrial, and Independence Day.
Parks and Recreation Director Brian Witty said these movie events are a great opportunity for a summer picnic with the kids.
The commissioners also discussed the upcoming Youth Arts Month that runs the entire month of March with local students' artwork displayed on the first and second floors of the Civic Center. An artists' reception takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, at the Civic Center. Light refreshments will be provided by Culinary Arts students, student musicians will provide entertainment, and the commissioners will give out awards.
The Arts and Culture Commission begins its meetings, which are televised, with a guest artist. In the past, these have been musicians, painters, quilters, gourd artists, and writers. The Commission is always looking for artists to tell about themselves and present their work.
The commissioners also are seeking music groups and performers who want to perform in the Civic Center's new amphitheater this summer. They plan a grand opening celebration for July 3.
