Obituary: Melvin M. Laib
Melvin M. Laib, 74, passed away at his home in the presence of loved ones on Jan. 22, 2015, in Phoenix, Arizona. Mel was born on Jan. 3, 1941, to the late Emanuel and Frieda (Kurle) Laib in Mercer, North Dakota.
Mel was a successful business owner in Downey, California, before moving to Arizona, where he worked in real estate for numerous years. On July 31, 1996, he married Michele Cappiello-Essick in Phoenix.
Mel enjoyed rediscovering and playing his guitar, spending hours practicing it daily. Mel owned several racehorses in his lifetime. He supported and followed his daughter, Tanya, in her career as a jockey. Mel's greatest joy was traveling with Michele. He also cherished spending time with friends, family and playing with his grandchildren.
Mel is survived by his two brothers; a loving wife of 18 1/2 years, Michele; his daughter Tanya Laib-Shipley and spouse Brett; stepson Tim (Stephany) Essick; stepdaughter Cheri (Lincoln) Kurtze; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many loving friends.
