Seventh-grade students in Acorn Montessori School's Gifted and Talented Program used their engineering skills to create catapults out of specific materials this past month. Armed with only yarn, popsicle sticks, rubber bands and a spoon, the teams of two built their machines and dispatched a variety of objects on Jan. 14.

The winning team of Shane Hinds and Harrison Molina fired off a penny in their catapult that traveled more than 44 feet.

The sixth-grade Gifted and Talented class is learning to solve mysteries, while the eighth-grade class is delving into robotics and soon will build two robots.
