Roughrider softball splits 1st 2 games of 2015 season

COLLEGE SOFTBALLYavapai 2, Snow 1Western Nevada 6, Yavapai 2Yavapai vs. El Paso (n)The Yavapai College softball team won its 2015 season opener, and picked up the program's first victory since April 24, 2013, in the process, Saturday over Snow College (Utah) at the College of Southern Nevada Kick-off Classic.Friday's tournament games were postponed because of inclement weather in Las Vegas.Returning to the field on Saturday after not fielding a team in 2014, the Roughriders and their pitchers, Lynae Klemmedson and Savanna Velaszuez, combined for the 2-1 win over Snow.At the plate for YC, Shelby Burke and Jessica Mesa each had an RBI. Burke and Sydney Forray scored a run apiece.Later in the day, Yavapai lost to Western Nevada College, 6-2. The score from the third game versus El Paso Community College Saturday night wasn't immediately available.Two games that the Roughriders missed on Friday will be made up today, Feb. 1. YC will face Salt Lake Community College at 8 a.m. and Western Nevada College at 10:30 a.m.COLLEGE BASEBALLWith Vegas tourney canceled, Yavapai to play in PV todaySince the College of Southern Nevada tournament was canceled because of heavy rains in Las Vegas on Friday, the Roughriders' baseball team will instead host a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m. today against Salt Lake Community College.These games will be played at Bradshaw Mountain High School's baseball field in Prescott Valley instead of Roughrider Park because of the recent soaking rains in Prescott.Yavapai is scheduled to play another doubleheader with Salt Lake starting at noon Monday, most likely at Roughrider Park. If the games aren't on YC's home field, they will be played at Bradshaw again.
