Man dies after jump from jail's second floor
CAMP VERDE - A man who jumped from a second-level tier at the Camp Verde jail last week and later died had been arrested after his brother was charged in a burglary case, according to sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.
Jacob Butler, 31, jumped from the second floor in what is presumed to be a suicide attempt, D'Evelyn said. Jacob was arrested on multiple drug charges after authorities served a search warrant at the Cottonwood home where his brother, Dustin Butler, lives.
Dustin, 32, is the suspect in what D'Evelyn called the "multi-thousand dollar" November burglary of a relative's home in Cornville. He was arrested Dec. 15 and charged with burglary, theft, criminal damage, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of firearms by a prohibited possessor, and trafficking in stolen property.
Jacob had just returned from a court appearance when he jumped from the second level, D'Evelyn said.
He added that no other inmates were in the common housing area at the time.
Jacob was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he died of his injuries Wednesday, Dec. 23.
