Advent - a season of waiting and preparing
While most people think the Christmas season arrived the day after Thanksgiving or even before that, the weeks before Christmas in many Christian churches are observed as a different season called "Advent," a time to wait and prepare for Christ's arrival.
The Advent season arrives four Sundays before Christmas and lasts until Christmas Eve. At Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Prescott Valley, the first Sunday in Advent, Sunday, Nov. 29, started with a theme of "hope" and also was the Sunday of the "Advent Event," an opportunity to bless the items that fill our worship space during this season, to deck the halls, and enjoy food and fellowship together.
Each Sunday in Advent, Emmanuel lights a new candle on the Advent wreath, working through the Sundays of hope, peace, love and joy. Special choral and handbell music is a part of each Sunday service. This Sunday, Dec. 6 is Emmanuel's final new member Sunday of the year.
On Sunday, Dec. 13, at the 10:15 a.m. service, the children will present their Christmas program, "Unfrozen," a spoof on the movie "Frozen." And, on Sunday, Dec. 20, at the 8:15 a.m. service, an adult music program will feature the adult choir and handbells groups.
Fully prepared to welcome Christ and the Christmas season, Emmanuel will offer two worship services Christmas Eve, at 6 and 8 p.m.
Emmanuel's new Saturday evening service continues in December, with a more contemplative service beginning every Saturday at 5 p.m.
Communion is part of every worship service at Emmanuel, and everyone is welcome to receive it. Emmanuel welcomes everyone to come and worship, wait and prepare, and get ready for Christ's arrival in the world, and in our hearts.
Emmanuel Lutheran Church is located at 7763 E. Long Look Drive, Prescott Valley. Part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Emmanuel offers three weekly worship services - a 5 p.m. Saturday evening contemplative service, an 8:15 a.m. blended traditional service, and a 10:15 p.m. blended contemporary service.
