Foodie Review: Taco Don's presents Mexican food the way it's supposed to be
If you are looking for fancy, just keep driving, but if you are looking for arguably the best Mexican food in town, then pull into Taco Don's at 624 Miller Valley Road. They have a good-sized menu of traditional Mexican selections. There are 15 Burrito and chimichanga selections. This does not include 10 additional breakfast burrito combinations that are served all day. There are enchiladas, chili rellenos, the Mexican pizzas are a delicious combination of two layers of tortillas topped with cilantro, cheese, onions, olives, tomatoes and your choice of chicken, ground beef or shredded beef and they come in a large or small size. The small is plenty for two people and is only $5.99.
There are also taquitos, tamales, taco salad, nachos, fry bread, tostadas, breakfast plate specials, churros and kids meals. Of course there are the tacos, oh boy the tacos. Folks, these tacos are not fancy concoctions like at the Café Milagro or Barrio Café in Phoenix, they are authentic Mexican street food simply prepared with the freshest ingredients.
There are a wide variety of taco combinations and they come crispy, fried or soft. Shredded beef, chicken, ground beef and fish are the available meats. There are many combinations of street tacos in for only $1.25. All of their food is made to order with fresh ingredients.
Can't stay to eat? Everything is made to go and there is a convenient drive up window that is constantly busy.
The most expensive item on the menu is $9.99 for a large Mexican pizza or you can get street tacos for $1.25 each. There is an excellent selection of Mexican and domestic beers, soft drinks, coffee and tea.
We started off with chips and Taco Don's homemade salsa (mild or hot). The chips were warm and fresh. We had two shredded beef tacos that were fried. They were simple and delicious with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. The tortilla was crispy and the beef was very tender with excellent flavor. Accompanying this was a cheese chili relleno. A nice sized chili pepper deep-fried in a crispy coating stuffed with cheese and melted cheese on top. This is a Mexican standard and Taco Don's does it as well or better than anyone.
My wife had the shredded beef chimichanga combo. The chimichanga is a deep-fried burrito filled with very tender shredded beef. It is a generous portion with a side of delicious Mexican rice, black beans and a drink. A very flavorful dish that will not leave you hungry.
Their breakfast burritos and breakfast plates are another excellent choice and served all day. The burritos are large and the green chili is amazing. Very tender bite sized beef chunks with enough green chili to make the flavor distinctive.
Taco Don's is open six days a week (closed Sunday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., eat in or take out. The breakfast items are served all day. They have dinner specials most days of the week. Great food, great service and a diner-type atmosphere make this a must try for Mexican food aficionados.
