This week, America lost a hero. On the morning of Tuesday, April 7, 2015, George Lincoln Hauk passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife at Highgate Senior Living in Prescott, Arizona.

A sailor and engineer at heart, George was a Pearl Harbor survivor and Purple Heart recipient. He was born in Alameda, California, in 1922. An international Hall of Fame Swimmer, his mother, Nell Schmidt, inspired his passion for swimming and the ocean, while his father, a professional musician, gifted him with the love of music and the arts.

He joined the Navy in 1941 early during the course of World War II, and served as a radioman aboard the California during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite substantial burns, and shrapnel wounds he rescued a several crew mates. As consequence, he received a Purple Heart award.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1945, and resumed his work at Western Electric, retiring much later as a supervisor in that organization.

He is survived by his wife Peggy; three adult children and their spouses; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
