HUSD's Mountain View offers STEAM ed as part of extended curriculum
STEAM education, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, is addressing real-world problems using all of the disciplines, integrated, to help students develop 21st century skills necessary for post-secondary as well as the skills for career readiness.
One day every week students in first through sixth grades are able to take classes to enrich their lives physically, mentally and academically. There are two 10-week sessions offered yearly. Students have the opportunity to choose three classes in priority order each session. Classes include EIE (Engineering is Elementary) curriculum centering on wind and weather, water, rocks, environmental issues, magnetism, and a student favorite - bubbleology. The curriculum combines all the components of STEAM solving real-life situations. In addition, Robotics is offered, as well as Science Olympiad Classes.
This year Mountain View competed across Arizona in Science Olympiad trials at the recent North-Central Regional Competition. Mountain View Elementary School's team of only sixth-graders brought home a sixth place in Bridges and a ninth place in Bottle Rockets. The team will compete at the State Final Tournament on April 11.
